By the Window

Standing in the dim kitchen, I brew coffee. The gurgling sound announces the beginning of the day, the roasted scent drifts into the quiet living room.

I take a yoghurt out of the fridge. Take the stiff lid off the jar of granola I made yesterday. Slide the drawer open, choose a spoon.

Every morning, my hand reaches for the same spoon. When I told my grandmother I was moving to Finland, she gave me this flat bamboo spoon. Nothing remarkable, yet it was her favourite.

I set a ceramic bowl down on the table. Pull out the chair by the window and lean back into it. The chair is ice cold, but it cannot push me away. Instead, I surrender to it.

Sip by sip, hot coffee runs through my empty body. The world outside is the colour of the yoghurt.

My seventh winter here.

The language that sounded like a spell has started to make sense. The endless dark winter has become almost manageable. And this house, which once felt like someone else’s, has become the place I call home.

Before I notice, my warmth has melted into the chair. I no longer feel its coldness.

I scoop up the last spoonful of yoghurt. At my feet, my dog stretches, letting out a long yawn.
